IMO MARIANA LUCIA CERGHIZAN
(August 15, 1956 - January 6, 2009)

IMO VICTOR DULA
(April 11, 1919 – February 25, 2009)
The beloved brother of the Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church in Los Angeles, Mr. Victor Dula, of Hollywood, California, passed away on February 25, 2009.
The Funeral Service was held by Fr. Constantin Alecse , in the Old North Church of Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, on Monday, March 2, 2009 at 2:30 pm.
At the end of the service, the eulogy wad delivered by his closest friend in Los Angeles, Mr. Stefan Dondoe , who, among other things, he noted: “ I've met Victor many years ago when his daughter Manuela and his son-in-law Romulus, my friends that were living in Romania, were able to come to visit him after the collapse of the communist regime in that country.
As soon as I met Victor, I realized that he was a very special person with an extraordinary interesting life experience; with his storytelling talent and good humor he always was captivating his audience, young and old. In short time Victor, my wife and I become very good friends and along the years had a chance to know him better.
Victor fled Romania in 1947, just as the communists were taking over the country. First, he unsuccessfully tried to get to Italy passing through Yugoslavia. In a second attempt, he succeeded to reach Vienna, Austria, where he lived and worked for few years. Then, he moved to Paris where he continued to work hard and save enough money to eventually cross the ocean to his dreamed destination, Rio de Janeiro. In Rio, where he settled for many years, he started his own business, met famous personalities, built a mansion-like home on a hilltop and tried hard to reunite with his family from Romania. Eventually he succeeded to bring only his old parents, but was unable to reunite with his wife and daughter.
Years later when the economic situation in Brazil started to deteriorate, Victor moved to Los Angeles where he managed to make his business “Victor of Paris” famous within the artistic community of Hollywood.
Victor continued to work till two years ago when, at age 87, decided to semi retire; however, another business he had in Los Angeles, he continued to manage till the very end.
Along his long life, Victor worked hard with honesty and dignity; he was fluent in five languages: Romanian, English, Portuguese, Spanish and German. He was a proud, handsome and kind gentleman that through his hard work, honesty, wisdom and exemplary life conduct set a high mark example for all who knew him.
We lost a very dear friend. God, our Lord, bless him in Your Kingdom!” – Mr. Dondoe concluded his Eulogy.
After sharing some spiritual thoughts with the family (daughter Manuela Ana & R. Andrei, son-in-law), and the rest of participants, Fr Constantin concluded the service in the Chapel. Victor Dula was layed to rest in the same cemetery. May God rest his soul in peace. Dumnezeu sa-l ierte!
Excerpts from Victor Dula's interview to Detour Magazine, May 1996
Written by Grant Tume, photographed by Dan Chavkin
"My name is Victor Dula; I am a barber. I work as 'Victor of Paris', my fictitious name, because I lived in Paris for three years and I speak French.
I was born in Romania, in the city of Timisoara, where I learn my profession. When I was 17, I went to Bucharest, where I continued to work in good and high-class salons. In 1941 I was chosen as the private barber to General Ion Antonescu. He ruled Romania at this time—he was in charge as second man after King Mihai.
In 1946 I went to Austria, where I stayed for one year working in a very nice barbershop on the Maria Hilfenstrasse. After that I went to Germany, and then to Paris, where I worked for Georges Georgious, the president of French coiffure. He took me to the French Riviera at Cannes and, when I returned to Paris, I worked for Mademoiselle De Choissy, a princess.
I was in Brussels, Belgium, for a short time, then Rotterdam, Casablanca and Marrakech. I returned to Paris for a short before emigrating to Rio de Janeiro, where I rented a shop in the big, new Hotel Excelsior Copacabana. I stayed there for 26 years, after which I emi grated in 1975 to the U.S.A. and Los Angeles, where I opened my own barber shop.
In 1974 when I was in Rio, I received a phone call at my shop from the manager of the Copacabana Palace Hotel to come and cut the hair of King Baudouin of Belgium, because I was the only barber who spoke French. I went there, I said, ‘Majesty' and I cut his hair.
They call my shop ‘the actor's barber shop'."
I ask Victor what killed the classic neigh borhood barbershop. I have my suspicions, which he confirms, emphatically: ‘THE BEATLES'.
"What killed the barbershop and the barber was the Beatles", Victor reiterates. "Because they let their hairs grow as long as the ladies, it became a matter for the hair dressers. We barbers were still doing the normal style haircut, only to the neck. The average man visited his barber every Friday or Saturday, so that he would be neat and presentable on Sunday, whether for church, a family gath ering, or the return to work on Monday. In those days a barber could stay open until midnight just to finish his customers.
Today, men let their hair grow, they walk around in pants with h oles in them, and nobody shaves. The young people that go to a barber these days will not come to me because I have white hair; the rest go to these 'artists' that won't cut your hair until they give you a shamp oo first. I still have my regulars who come in for a shave and a haircu t, but it is a dying tradition. I am the only 'barber' from Fairfax Avenue to Beverly Hills—the rest are all hair stylists, hair 'designers'... o r artists. I am not an artist—I am barber."
The good old days may have been overrated, but Victor Dula certainly is certainly not. H e's a hell of a lot cheaper than therapy, a whole lot prettier than a hangover, and he once cut Erik Estrada's hair. Gentleman and barber, Victor of Paris is truly "a cut above".
Victor of Paris barbershop is located at 8535 W. Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. Telephone (310) 659-0750.
